HGTV has gifted us with the term, “forever home.” For some reason, we love watching while hopeful couples wander through houses looking for the key components of location, size, and outdoor space to perfectly line up and equal the perfect place to live for the rest of their lives. Sledgehammers slam through walls to create open concept rooms which better serve growing families. Dream kitchens are installed, bathrooms are renovated, and landscaping designs are implemented—all to create the ideal place to live.
When I was 2 years old, my parents bought a stone cape cod which has turned out to be their forever home. The celebrations, laughter, and life those walls have witnessed make it a special place.
Putting down roots and investing in the setting of your story is a lovely part of living. However, no matter whether you are staying somewhere temporarily or are living in the house of your dreams, as a follower of Christ, you have a ‘forever home’ being prepared for you right now.
Jesus said: “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:2-3).
We can be sure that the eternal home Jesus is getting ready for us will far exceed anything HGTV could exhibit. “According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-4).
Rejoice today, friend, in the hope of a beautiful, permanent inheritance that is yours through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Your forever home will be worth the wait.
