All of the seasons are a gift from the Lord, but there is just something about summer that sets it apart from the rest. Yet with so much to enjoy outdoors, there’s no need to spend too much time, energy, or money welcoming this season to our homes. With simplicity and affordability in mind, Vanessa Hunt shares 5 summer decorating ideas to transform your home into a summer haven.
I consider summer to be the ‘exhale’ season. The slow release after months filled with cold weather and busy schedules. It’s the season when we spend as much time outdoors as possible. I can be found sipping coffee on my deck each morning. The chirping of birds and the fluttering of leaves act as my own personal soundtrack. While the decor used to reflect the other seasons may more loudly declare its presence (I’m looking at you Christmas), when it comes to decorating for summer, I find a more subtle approach is preferable.
Outside of my window, the trees are lush and the flowers are blooming. The sun shines brightly for so many hours of the day that our room darkening curtains get more use than at any other time of the year. With all of that as a backdrop, there’s no need to spend too much time, energy, or money ushering this beautiful summer season into our homes.
With simplicity and affordability in mind, I have five tried and true summer decorating ideas to add summer decor to my spaces. I’m thrilled to be sharing them with you today.
1. SIGNS OF THE SEA
If I can simply fill a bowl and call it decorating, I consider that a win. You can use seashells you’ve collected on beach excursions or bags of shells you purchased from the craft store (no judgment here!). Either way, you can make the perfect summer statement by simply putting shells in a bowl. Add a few bowls to a tray or side table, or even put a larger one on top of a stack of books. There’s no doubt that each time you see the seashells you will be reminded of days filled with sand and sun.
2. WOVEN ACCENTS
Whether it’s rattan or wicker, woven elements add texture and bring in a wonderful natural sensibility that reflects the season when we spend the most time outside. Napkin rings, trays, baskets, or bowls all help to soften a room and can often easily be found at thrift shops. Wicker furniture is often used outdoors. But it could be brought inside during the summer months or even all year round. It adds warmth to any space and can easily be incorporated into all design styles.

3. LIGHTER FABRICS
Bringing in lighter fabrics in both color and texture is a wonderfully subtle way to reflect the summer season. This could mean switching out a heavy duvet cover for one made of lightweight linen or cotton. Or it could be adding pillows to your sofa in a color palette more reflective of the warmer months. Changing fabrics is one of the most simple ways to decorate for the seasons. Choose blue and white ticking stripes or floral patterns in muted tones (go brighter if you prefer!). Or even stick with warmer solid colors. All are great options for brightening up your spaces with minimal effort.
4. FRESH FROM THE FARM
Between farmer’s markets, roadside stands, or your local grocery store, there’s never a better season for all of the fresh flowers and fruit your heart desires. And these things also the most affordable during the summer months. Vases or pitchers filled with flowers are pleasing to the eye. Plus the sweet aroma is the perfect bonus. Even something as simple as a small bunch of lavender speaks to your senses and soothes your spirit. And now is the time when a bowl full of fruit (especially citrus) does double duty. It adds both beauty and function. That’s my kind of decorating!
5. BLUE AND WHITE
There’s no other combination that quite encapsulates summer like blue and white. These colors come through in the stripes on pillows and the patterns on dishes. The pop of blue on a neutral background reminds us of the blue skies and fluffy white clouds we enjoy so much this time of year. Blue and white decor can be easily found at home decor stores or even secondhand. A display of blue and white transferware makes a beautiful statement on a dining room sideboard. Or a blue and white pitcher filled with fresh flowers can add the perfect splash of summer to any space in your home.
Enjoy the Blessings of Summer
All of the seasons of the year are a gift from the Lord. They are each wonderful in their own unique ways. But, there is just something about summer that sets it apart from the rest. Maybe it’s the warm evenings when the kids run around the neighborhood until the street lights turn on. Or the unhurried meals when you can linger over conversations and good food. Perhaps it’s the long-awaited time off for a family vacation. Regardless, the summer days offer us a multitude of sweet, simple blessings to enjoy.
In June, the summer months seem to stretch out before us. We can be tempted to think we have all the time in the world to enjoy them. But, as you know, the days filled with barbecues, swimming pools, and iced tea on the front porch are over all too soon. So let’s make sure we spend our time getting out and enjoying them rather than stressing over decorating for them. I hope some of the ideas I’ve shared with you here will help you do just that!

Love all of these decorating ideas. In Florida it is nearly always sunny and warm so changing out colors according to the season helps to define the seasons here.
