“Politicians disgust me,” my friend said with a grimace. “What’s wrong with our national and world leaders today?”
I knew exactly how she was feeling.
No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, chances are you’ve been disillusioned or even disgusted lately. So many headlines and news reports leave us scratching our heads in bewilderment.
Yet, should we be surprised?
Maybe what we see is exactly what we should expect.
Bible teacher Warren Wiersbe said, “The spiritually minded saint understands more about the affairs of this world from his Bible than the leaders of the world understand from their human perspective.”
In other words, someone who doesn’t know Christ can’t understand things from God’s perspective. “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Only the spiritually mature Christian―one who is growing in their understanding of God’s Word―can interpret events from a Christian worldview. That means everything that happens―past, present, and future―is seen in light of God’s unfolding plan for mankind.
It doesn’t matter how intelligent, educated, or trained you are. If you’re a Christian, the Holy Spirit imparts wisdom to you and helps you understand things with the “wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 2:7).
So, when faced with the actions of some of our national or world leaders, instead of recoiling in disgust, perhaps we should pray for them. Pray that more leaders would bow their knees to the Creator of the Universe and choose to serve and honor Him. And let’s remember to pray for our government’s Christian leaders too, asking God to help them stand firm in their faith and respond to the Spirit’s promptings.
Which leaders might God be prompting you to pray for—instead of complain about—today?
